Brody Stevens and Howard Kremer w/Judith Owen, Geoffrey Louis Koch

When: Sat., May 24, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $10-$15
In a textbook case of “can’t hurt to ask,” for her new album Ebb & Flow, Welsh pianist/singer-songwriter Judith Owen took a shot in the dark by inquiring whether the session musicians who’d backed some of her biggest influences might lend a hand in the studio. Much to her surprise, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, bassist Lee Sklar and drummer Russ Kunkel all said yes. Between them, the three elder statesmen played on classic ’70s troubadour pop releases such as Carole King’s Tapestry, James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, and Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty. At this stage in her career, it’s appropriate that Owen would reach to the very architects of the sound she’s worn on her sleeve for years. Owen has always shown a knack for addressing grave sadness without coming across as maudlin; this time around, her songwriting acumen ensures that she holds her own in such experienced company. Sklar accompanies her for this free show. SABY REYES-KULKARNI
