Brick Factory Party feat. C.J. Boyd w/Sugar Skulls & Kyle Hamlett
Brick Factory, the brand-new space in Cummins Station, is a promising new milieu for art shows and concerts indeed. Moreover, Brick Factory — whose proprietors bill themselves as “facilitators of human potential” — will function as a co-op-like collective, where people can pay a membership fee in order to come and go as they please and use the Factory’s woodshop, tools, photography studio, classes and more. It’s a novel, wonderfully community-oriented idea, and one of Brick Factory’s first events is tonight’s show, which will feature music from CJ Boyd, Sugar Sk*-*lls and Kyle Hamlett. Hamlett is the frontman for the transfixing and pensive wintry folk outfit Lylas, and Sugar Sk*-*lls is the blipping, blooping 8-bit project of Ben Marcantel — a project that our own Lance Conzett once described as “somewhere between a really good level of Castlevania and the score for a John Carpenter movie.” And CJ Boyd … well, the last time I saw the exceptionally skilled ambient bassist perform, it was several years ago, and he and his CJ Boyd Sextet were playing a show at a friend’s house in Murfreesboro — and he was nude. They were all nude. Not that he will be tonight. I’m only saying.
