Maybe you’ll be at this show because you’re a fan of androgynous, bland, indie-pop mega-ginger and headliner Brett Dennen. Fair enough. It’s openers Dawes, however, who will likely put on the more fulfilling show. For fans of pensive folk rock, anyhow. Dawes’ forthcoming sophomore effort, Nothing Is Wrong, isn’t a particularly idiosyncratic or landmark release. Songs like album opener “Time Spent in Los Angeles,” however, feature a comfortingly familiar formula: hopeful chord progressions paired with sweetly melancholic lyrics, an Americana-fueled delivery and rich, even instrumentation. It’s a formula that worked on Wilco’s Summerteeth — a very close elder relative to Nothing Is Wrong, for sure — as well as any number of heartland-rock staples. Yeah, Dawes likely worships guys like Tweedy and Petty and Bruce, and they certainly know their way around a twangy, earnest solo. But as far as dusty, soulful, mid-tempo American rock ’n’ roll music goes, since when is that a bad thing? Nothing Is Wrong will be out June 7 via ATO Records. Opening for Brett Dennen.
