Blake Edwards' film adaptation of the Truman Capote novella shares a genre with other explorations of 60 morality including Blow-Up, Alfie, and I Love You Alice B. Toklas. Tales of dissolution and free-spiritedness, they titillate the viewer with substance abuse, implied sex, and the inevitable "wild party" sequence. (Which includes, in this case, a flaming hat and a bathtub makeout session.) Ambivalent morality tales, they end with a protagonist chastened by the realization that night after night of wild, sybaritic debauchery will never equal the thrill of good old-fashioned human affection. In this case, its Audrey Hepburn (as Holly Golightly) at her most stylish. And the films message is apt; in todays economy, who hasnt considered making some cash as a paid companion for jailed mob bosses?
