Brandi Carlile and the Nashville Symphony

When: Sat., July 5, 8 p.m. 2014
After Brandi Carlile made millions on her folk records, she returned to her hometown to rock the Seattle Symphony. And then she did it in Portland, Ore. And again in Iowa. Here’s why it works: Carlile’s music is all about dynamic contrast (think how “The Story” jumps between coy, sweet verse to ragged, I-can-hear-your-vocal-chords-grinding chorus). Last year, Carlile sold out 1 Symphony Place when she partnered with the Nashville Symphony for a one-off concert. Now she’s back — bigger, rawer and with her favorite type of backing band. Hers is the range between the pianissimo and subito fortissimo, and ain’t no party like a classical music party, because a classical music party does it louder. JON GUGALA
