The cozy open-air acoustics and folky meditations that the Bowerbirds specialize in may be familiar, but the North Carolina trio have avoided getting pegged as regional revivalists. Perhaps it's how singer Phil Moore veers into cryptic musings that somehow remain earthy and inviting, or the guileless way multi-instrumentalist Mark Paulson accents Beth Tacular's mournful accordion. But together the Bowerbirds rove territories that are at once wholly organic and yet otherworldly. Out in support of their second LP, Upper Air, which may very well be the absolute best of its kind 2009 has yet to produce, the Bowerbirds are much-needed reaffirmation that firm roots trump flowery excess. Tristen opens.
