Boro Rock

If Robert Pollard had grown up in Austin, he might’ve become Centro-Matic singer/guitarist Will Johnson. Like Pollard, Johnson writes prolifically—so much so that he started a second band (South San Gabriel, same lineup) to handle the quieter, introspective stuff. Centro-Matic evinces a fuzzy, lo-fi, hook-lined vibrancy reminiscent of GBV but with country-rock twang instead of a British Invasion lilt. Johnson’s new double-album Dual Hawks features offbeat winners like the careening, suggestive “Quality Strange” and the dark, rambunctious paean to relentless modernity “Strychnine, Breathless Way.” Murfreesboro septet Glossary’s country heritage pulses through their winsome rock melodies as if they were Superdrag channeling the V-Roys. (They’re presently writing their sixth album, due early next year.) Chris Flemmons, frontman for bluesy folk-punkers Baptist Generals, opens.
