Recently named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts — that’s about the biggest award a musician can get in this country — Del’s stepping onto the stage he first played as a Blue Grass Boy nearly half a century ago. But despite the march of time and growing heap of honors, the elder McCoury remains a vital, engaged artist who’s driving one of the hottest and most accomplished bands in the history of the genre. For Nashville audiences who mostly get to see the DMB in their brief Opry mini-sets, an opportunity for the full treatment is one that shouldn’t be missed — and don’t overlook the opening Steep Canyon Rangers, who are right in the thick of a deservedly busy year that finds them mixing their own appearances with work as Steve Martin’s back-up band. That’s a bill that embodies the past, present and future of the music, and it’s the perfect closer for this summer’s series.
