Blue Highway will be working especially hard today, as they go subterranean for the latest in the exquisitely programmed Bluegrass Underground series, then zip back to street level and into town for a Station Inn appearance. If you want a taste not just of today’s masters, but of where tomorrow’s bluegrass might be headed, opt for the former, where they’ll be preceded by the lively, cello-inflected neargrass of Rockin’ Acoustic Circus. But if you want to catch Blue Highway in a more relaxed and intimate setting, go for the latter. Either way, you’ll be treated to a band that’s rooted enough in the classics to comfortably knock out a standard, yet strong enough in the songwriting department to craft sets and albums entirely out of their own originals. Especially on fire lately is fiddle/mandolin man Shawn Lane, who’s arguably the most underappreciated multi-instrumentalist in the genre today.
