Billy Joe Shaver w/Ryan Cullwell

When: Fri., June 27, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $15
Billy Joe Shaver apparently had his doubts as to whether or not he had an album’s worth of new material in him, until he had a little talk with Todd Snider. Being a Shaver booster (and occasional collaborator), Snider had a vested interest in the matter. Ditto the fans of classic country, Texas and archetypal Americana songwriting to whom Shaver is a legend, thanks to his having written his share of earthbound testaments for the ages, supplied Waylon Jennings with an entire album’s worth for Honky Tonk Heroes in the early ’70s, and caught a powerful second wind in the alt-country scene with his guitarist son, the late Eddy Shaver, by his side in the early ’90s. They won’t be disappointed by Long in the Tooth. During the title track, “Hard to Be an Outlaw” and “I’ll Love You As Much As I Can,” Shaver rues the way time has ravaged his body and thrown it comically out of sync with a spirit and desire that have yet to mellow. Just a couple months short of 75, he sounds leathery and brash and sweet and prayerful in turns. JEWLY HIGHT
