You probably think of sight as an essential tool for drawing, but have you ever thought of drawing as an essential tool for seeing? According to Nashville artist and teacher Suzanne McDermott, Drawing is a tool for self-realization, a conviction that has spawned this neighborhood art gathering. Inspired by the U.K.'s highly successful Big Draw Dayan annual day of drawing activities at over 1000 venuesMcDermott's event encourages all people, regardless of artistic ability, to come together to draw and learn how to see the neighborhood in a new way. The festivities begin at 8 a.m. at Frothy Monkey with a brief pep talk/discussion; participants then head off to draw their homes or favorite 12South buildings. You can drop off your drawings at Frothy Monkey, then return at 6 p.m. for a reception and exhibit of all the works. (Check out bigdrawnashville.org for details.) As fabulous as this idea is, it's just a cornerstone for McDermott's grander ambitions: Through her organization Drawing America (drawingamerica.org), she's already established similar happenings at Atlanta's High Museum, the Asheville Art Museum and a suburban Philadelphia school, with the ultimate goal being annual Big Draw events all over the country, coinciding with others across the globe, in what amounts to an artistic version of Earth Hour. It all sounds quitedare we sayvisionary.
