Best Upcoming Country Star

Sarah Buxton

Music Row insiders pass around Buxton's demos faster than record business gossip. A former local club rocker, Buxton has evolved into a raspy-voiced country rocker whose songwriting sparkles with personality. Breaking through the usual careful country sentiments, she creates forward-looking tunes about the concerns of young women that are as real as they are clever, much as a young Matraca Berg did 20 years earlier. Buxton already has enjoyed a top hit by co-writing Keith Urban's "Stupid Boy," one of the most unusual country songs to get heavy airplay in recent years. Her 2006 digital-only EP, Almost a Record, teased interest, and now she's readying a full album for 2009 on Lyric Street Records. She won't be Music Row's favorite secret much longer. —MICHAEL McCALL
