Fall is the time to go to Breeden's in Mt. Juliet, when the orchard sags with russet fruit and kids are welcome to pluck the sweet, crisp bounty from the trees. Summer's fine too, because you can show your citified offspring that peaches don't actually start life in the supermarket produce aisles. But only adults can harvest the peach crop, because the delicate fruit can't handle the strain of rambunctious kids. (Tell me about it.) Still, it's worth the Sunday drive to buy a basket of peaches and some fried pies that melt across the tongue with a thick fruity taste of deep summer in the South. —CARRINGTON FOX
