The answer: mulch. The question: What can you do with your kids to teach the virtues of giving back to the community? Once a month, the Friends of Radnor Lake host Volunteer Days, meeting up on crisp Saturday mornings to mulch trails, remove invasive species (consider yourself served, Japanese honeysuckle) and plant native wildflowers. Not only does it preserve one of Middle Tennessee's treasures, it gives everyone involved a sense of pride in stewardship, no matter how young. The next Volunteer Day is Oct. 25; see radnorlake.org for more information. —JIM RIDLEY
