Best New Building

Music City Center

Writers' Choice

Consider this strictly a judgment on its public face, not a verdict on its cost, its value, or its economic viability: Those answers will come years down the line. But to be so huge — as the Scene’s Christine Kreyling pointed out, its main exhibit hall could house two Hindenburgs — the city’s massive new convention center wears its hulk surprisingly lightly. The rolling curves meld with the cityscape, the cut-through of Sixth Avenue breaks up the bulk, the completed Korean Veterans Boulevard creates a compelling urban canyon, and at night the twinkling lights and shimmering glass planes produce the Close Encounters wow effect its builders sought. Come on now, world — fill it up!
