Nashville is usually on the receiving end of traveling shows, but the Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery flipped roles when they organized a survey of this Ecuadorean artist. Fired by a fierce social consciousness, Guayasamin created palpable, animated figures, but he is not very well remembered outside his home country—exactly the kind of figure deserving the curatorial attention Vanderbilt gave him. After its debut here, the show traveled to the Organization of American States and to galleries in Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas and California. —DAVID MADDOX
