MLK Day at Vanderbilt

Writers Choice

This year’s Martin Luther King Day had the feeling of a great civil rights tipping point for criminal justice issues, and in Nashville that was largely due to the one-two punch of Vanderbilt’s programming. Voices From Solitary, an exhibit of art by death row inmates organized by professor Lisa Guenther, stirred emotions at Sarratt Gallery, and Vandy alumnus and author of The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander, delivered a rousing keynote speech on the American criminal justice system’s role in upholding a new racial caste system.
