Best Film Series

The Light and Sound Machine, Third Man Records

Writers Choice

Ten years ago, if you’d predicted 100 cinephiles would congregate monthly to watch avant-garde classics on 16mm in a screening room owned by Jack White, I’d’ve said, “Sure — in 20 years.” Thank programmer James Cathcart, Third Man’s Ben Swank (and White), and co-sponsor The Belcourt for making legendary films such as Robert Kramer’s Ice and Kidlat Tahimik’s Perfumed Nightmare something other than phantoms you read about in books — and for exposing local audiences to films they’ll be reading about in years to come, like Dan Sallitt’s The Unspeakable Act.
