Bernard de Clavière: Animalier Extraordinaire

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 22 2010
A horse is a horse, of course, but a painting of a horse is a horse of a different color. OK, enough horsing around. Bernard de Clavière’s Animalier Extraordinaire is an exhibition of equine-inspired art, and it's a real kick. Sorry. Including 67 pieces borrowed from private collections, this show puts the work of Count de Clavière, an internationally renowned painter and current Nashvillian, in the spotlight. During an artistic life that began in France, de Claviere found early connections with prominent people in Southern American — and particularly Tennesseean — horse culture. While showing work in New York near the end of the last century, the artist's paintings were discovered by a writer for the Wall Street Journal who proclaimed de Claviere to be “one of the leading animaliers of the 20th century.”
