Benefit for Kora feat. Royal Thunder, Demonaut, Sayonara & Across Tundras

When: Sat., Nov. 20, 5 p.m. 2010
Remember way back in the ’90s, before the Great Turn-of-the-Century Twee Scourge, when it wasn't unusual for women to sing like actual adults, and it was even more common for that singing to happen over big, huge, badass guitar tones? Yeah, there have been quite a few years of tinny indie bullshit and baby-doll cooing between now and then, but awesomeness is not completely extinct. Case in point: Atlanta's Royal Thunder — just signed to Relapse Records — who make mystical and muscular heavy metal in the classic, pre-“extreme” vein. RT's singer Miny Parsonz has a strong, soulful voice that eschews both the screeching histrionics that we expect out of most metal dudes and the infantilism that's so adored by the Pitchfork crowd. Throw in one tough-as-nails band and you've got a variety of awesome we haven't seen in ages.
