Kinky isnt merely the nickname of Richard S. Friedman, born in Chicago in 1944 but having spent most of his life in the great state of Texas. It also pretty much sums up the unpredictable curlicue life and career of a multitalented gadfly who has gained both serious and bemused attention as the leader of the satirical 70s country-rock band Kinky Friedman & the Texas Jewboys (e.g. Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in Bed"), as the author of a series of well-received mystery novels, and most recently as a candidate for public office. Friedmans sincere attempt to gain the governorship of Texas in 2006 failed, though he still has aspirations to advance his hybrid political platformtough on immigration, increasingly moderate on the death penalty and even softer on most social issues. At any rate, between his colorful persona and his creative pedigree, Friedmans ripe for theatrical enshrinement, and writer/producer Ted Swindley (Always, Patsy Cline) unveils the first formal draft of his new R-rated bioplay in a public reading under the direction of John Conlon. Swindleys previous entertainments based on country-music figures have been decidedly family-friendly, but this script promises something a lot edgier. Its cool that Nashville is the launch point, and you cant beat the price of admission: free. Reservations are recommended, though, by calling (615) 915-0891.
