Once upon a time, women were the keepers of the flame when it came to maintaining the mores and traditions of civilized, domestic life. Women's roles and opportunities have changed and expanded over the years, but are women still keeping vigil over hearth and home? Be a Doll--the latest show at Estel--brings together a group of 25 female artists to address everything from cancer to Barbie dolls to pageant princesses and boob jobs. Alexandra Carter's painting "Suckle" depicts the contemporary female as the sacrificial nourisher of society, while Lori Field's "Onset of Ugly" bodes badly for mother-daughter relationships. Heather Oelklaus' photograph "Dirty Laundry" addresses the drudgery of domestic "bliss" with a nod to the wry.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: June 4. Continues through July 25, 2009
