Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker at Davis-Kidd

Attached at the Heart: 8 Proven Parenting Principles for Raising Connected and Compassionate Children should become a very popular baby-shower present. Co-founders of Attachment Parenting International, Nicholson and Parker advocate "giving parents 'permission' to fall in love with their baby instead of worrying that they might spoil him." Their suggestions include breast-feeding, co-sleeping and "babywearing" (carrying the infant in a sling). Overall, their message is that the more touching that goes on between parent and child, the better. They also stress, when disciplining a child, to use the "golden rule": "treat children the way you would want to be treated if you were the child," and do not assign adult motivation to children. The book is full of practical suggestions that should allow new moms and dads to relax by realizing that love and affection are more important to the healthy development of children than rigid rules and punishment. Nicholson and Parker will talk about the principles of attachment parenting and sign their book, and the appearance will also feature a special performance by Kim Carnes, Ashley Cleveland, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Jonell Mosser and Odessa Settles.
