Barack ‘n’ Roll

He’s so busy laying tracks for other people—including buddies/kindred spirits Tommy Womack, Rodney Crowell and Todd Snider—he hasn’t spent much time boosting his own career. Kimbrough enjoyed modest success in late ’80s/early ‘90s leading Will & the Bushmen, then teamed with Womack in the Bis-Quits, but seems to have spent the balance of the last dozen years as an in-demand session guitarist and sideman. Hopefully, Americanitis should change that. His 2006 album is a vibrant, no punch-pulling broadside on the Bush years, which asks that God forgive our “Warring Ways,” laments the disappearance of “Pride” from the list of mortal sins, and forecasts “Wind Blowing Change,” over a mix of rollicking roots fueled by insistent brain-sticking hooks. It makes him an ideal musical guest for this “Obamarama” fundraiser.
