Bar life is such an afterthought that many of us only dimly know why we go where we go. But a good bar offers at least one reason for sliding up to the oak and slapping down a healthy chunk of change on the sauce. Neighborhood bars give us stumbling-home proximity. First-date bars promise that, in the right light, we're practically lookers, and touristy bars satiate our out-of-town guests with a voyeuristic gaze at the locals. But the bookcases on either end of these everyday options are the high rollers and the low joints – say, the bars that'll get you laid, or hired, or admired, vs. the bars you'll visit for consolation after you've screwed up whatever good thing you finally had going.
