Lately it seems all of classic slacker indie rock’s finest lo-fi luminaries have stopped slacking off and started rolling through town on reunion tours. Guided by Voices, Sebadoh, Man or Astro-man? Shit, Archers of Loaf play Mercy Lounge tonight. But just down the road, a few hours before that nostalgia trip gets under way, Nashville’s own fine purveyors of sweet, shambolic jams will reunite. After spending a quiet couple of years lying low, Bad Friend is back to reclaim its title as Music City’s Most Underappreciated Band, and they’ve even got an archival release to boot. Originally recorded in 2008, Let It Go features eight songs that could each fit perfectly between Pavement’s “Zurich Is Stained” and The Breeders’ “Divine Hammer” on a killer summer mixtape. Standouts include driving side-B opener “Stalemate,” which sounds like Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo singing over some mid-era R.E.M., the herky-jerky pop of “Before Time,” the yearning, anthemic melancholy of “Sugarlicker” and the infectious, jangle-laden closing rocker “Darksided.” So make a double-header of this release show and that Archers gig.
