Bachelorette at The Belcourt

Kiwi singer Annabel Alpers may have landed the coveted opening slot for cult folkie Bonnie "Prince" Billy, but behind her latest pet project Bachelorette, the two labelmates are polar opposites. Mining much the same glitzy digi-pop as Of Montreal and lushly cerebral soundscapes of Ladyhawke—toning down the theatrics of the former while venturing into a far more abstract version of the latter—Bachelorette flits through wistful synths and muted, hypnotic vocals for one intoxicating blend. Once a purely solo vehicle for Alper's post-graduate computer composition studies with her 2007 debut Isolation Loops—pieced together at a cloistered fishing cabin in southern New Zealand—Bachelorette has evolved into a full-blown band for her latest foray My Electric Family. Bonnie's "good earthly music" may draw the crowds, but rest assured that by the time the doors close, Bachelorette won’t be buried and forgotten.
