Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks w/Dustin Wong

When: Tue., April 29, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $14-$17
Depending on your appetite for experimental music, Avey Tare (real name Dave Portner) likely conjures two polarizing emotions: Utter disdain or unchecked glee. Those in the latter camp probably know and love the long-running weirdo pop band Animal Collective, in which Tare performs with his friends Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Geologist (Brian Weitz), and Deakin (Josh Dibb). Those in the former likely think the AnCo tribe goes too far, which is understandable: Tare, under the influence of David Lynch’s Inland Empire, once released an album of songs played backwards despite the fact that they sounded great played normally. (Savvy listeners un-reversed them.) In any case, Tare has returned with a new album that should be considered fantastic by both sets. Enter the Slasher House, made with Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian and veteran player Jeremy Hyman, telegraphs more centrist influences like Talking Heads, girl groups and garage pop. But that’s not to say there aren’t plenty of left-field turns along the way. Baltimore loop master Dustin Wong opens. RYAN BURLESON
