Nashville Children’s Theatre’s Emerging Artists Drama Camp sounds like summer fun and an opportunity for discovering and nurturing youthful performance skills. The learning won’t go to waste, either, as the kids accept the challenge of mounting this “school edition” of the smart-alecky hit Broadway musical that put a new spin on the term “puppet theater.” Original creators Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty are responsible for reworking the material, which softens the mature nature of their spoofy, modern-day coming-of-age tale with the fractured Sesame Street spirit. (This special version is rated PG-13.) The student actors range from grades 8–12, and the puppets they’ll be working with are brand-new creations of L.A.-based Russ Walko, whose credits include Henson and Disney. NCT education director Alicia Fuss directs the young players, and Shawn Knight is the musical director.
