Think of Parnassus Books’ First Editions club as the calm eye in the midst of the e-book storm. Ann Patchett & Co. hand-select 10 or 12 books a year and mail a signed first edition directly to members’ mailboxes. No one’s denying the convenience of a digital download, but the intrinsic value of the printed page is even harder to ignore, especially when it comes with a personalized touch and a Parnassus stamp of approval. The latest book to be featured is Paul Yoon’s Snow Hunters, a novella about a North Korean war refugee who defects to South America in an attempt to rebuild his life. It’s Yoon’s second book, but it comes on the heels of news that he’s won a National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 award. Patchett calls Snow Hunters “a beautiful and moving meditation on a solitary life.” Come to Yoon’s discussion of Snow Hunters at Parnassus tonight, and be prepared to pick up your own signed first edition.
