Art and Invention's Holiday Art Show

When: Dec. 18-24 2012
Art and Invention gets a lot of press around Tomato Art Fest in August, but it’s this time of year when I’m most grateful for the East Nashville gallery with the best selection of affordable art in town. They’re also open until 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, which makes them my go-to spot for last-minute purchases. “Feather balls” are glass bulbs with tufts of feathers encased inside like little hanging terrariums, and they’d make the fanciest ornament ever for your classy but hard-to-please mom. Cool animal sculptures by Maureen Hogan run from $40 to $375, and they’re quirky but in an idiosyncratic way that shows real talent. Most of the goods in the store are made by local artists and artisans, and there’s such a wide selection available that it’s possible to buy something for anyone on your list — from a moody college-age girl (Danielle Duer’s dolled-up pillows or Abril Andrade’s tiny Mark Ryden-esque paintings) to a design-savvy bachelor (Johanna Mueller’s intricate black-and-white prints).
