This masterwork by Tony- and Oscar-winning Tom Stoppard is an English country-house farce, set in 1809, that asks big questions about the universe and offers comedy in equal measure to tragedy — even as it hurtles forward in time, where two academic adversaries strive to piece together a puzzling truth. Suffice it to say that experiencing Nashville’s first production of the play in more than a decade should be mandatory for serious local theatergoers. The direction is by Ted Swindley, known for his country bio-musicals, but who’s been taking on headier material (e.g., The Exonerated) since his relatively recent move back to Music City. The cast features strong veterans such as Denice Hicks, David Compton and Jeff Boyet, plus a mix of local familiars like Amanda McCoy, Shannon Hoppe, Britt Byrd, Scott Rice and John Silvestro. (Coincidentally, a Broadway revival of the play, starring Billy Crudup, begins previews Feb. 26.)
