Annie Hall

When: Mon., Feb. 4 2013
“Annie and I broke up, and I still can’t get my mind around that. I keep sifting the pieces of the relationship through my mind, and examining my life, and trying to figure out, where did the screw-up come?” Delivered by Woody Allen’s Alvy Singer two minutes into this fragmentary examination of a doomed love affair — a “dead shark,” in the movie’s parlance — his all-too-relatable confession sets the tone for the most hilariously bittersweet rom-com to ever win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Its 93 minutes pack in an astounding array of sharp dialogue and great gags: an adult Alvy Singer returns to his grade-school classroom to find out what his classmates are doing now (“I used to be a heroin addict; now I’m a methadone addict”); subtitles that reveal the true meanings behind pretentious first-date banter; and of course that classic movie-line appearance by a famed media theorist. Along the way, Allen’s valentine to his then-muse Diane Keaton captures the zeitgeist of ’70s intellectual Manhattan and chronicles the trajectory of a relationship from first meeting to final parting. Capping this as an ideal date night, the $30 ticket includes food from Whole Foods and red and white wine selections — no lobster.
