Few painters have captured the American experience as poetically as Andrew Wyeth. As a realist painter hes not merely rendering faces against landscapes. His characters have such a thousand-yard/navel-gazing stare as they occupy the American countryside that they might as well be saying Now what? on behalf of all the unborn lost souls who will have to answer that question. Tonight at Cheekwood, Victoria Wyeth, the artists granddaughter, will share her own experience of the Painter of the People. Maybe its just me, but Wyeths paintings make me nostalgic for places Ive never been. I hope he was a happy guy. I plan on asking her. Victoria Wyeths lecture is free and open to the public.
