The thing about being a crusty old punk-rock dude is that, after a while, you realize a lot of bands you once loved didn’t really age too well. (Seriously, have you pulled out your Young Republipukes 7-inch lately? You can trust us when we say the novelty has worn off.) On the other hand, there are still acts — typically the ones who transcended the parochial view of punk rock all along — that still send shivers up your spine and smack that tubby, thirtysomething complacency right out of your skull. Exene Cervenka — founding member of Los Angeles’ greatest rock combo, X — and Kevin Seconds — the voice of 7 Seconds and possibly the best songwriter to ever come out of the hardcore punk milieu — are artists who fall firmly in the latter category.
