Amy LaVere

When: Thu., July 26, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $10
It makes sense that the Memphis singer, songwriter and bassist Amy LaVere takes the conventions of Americana into new areas — working with the late producer and pianist Jim Dickinson in a city known for its oddball take on pop music has left its mark on her. On her last full-length, 2011’s Stranger Me, LaVere covers Captain Beefheart’s “Candle Mambo” with surprising assurance, and performs a set of semi-tortured relationship songs that sometimes veer off into twisted pop territory. More recently she has appeared on Todd Snider’s Time as We Know It: The Songs of Jerry Jeff Walker and with Luther Dickinson on The Wandering’s new full-length Go On Now, You Can’t Stay Here. There are times when I wish LaVere would go even further into the kind of pop psychodramas Jim Dickinson helped create on Big Star’s Third, but that might scare the Americana devotees.
