Amy Lavere w/New Country Rehab

When: Thu., May 22, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $7
Carole King once sang of a rather overpowering, obedient sort of romantic devotion, vowing, “Where you lead I will follow.” The song took on a tone of codependence as the Gilmore Girls theme — and boy, is that not where Amy LaVere is coming from on her latest album, Runaway’s Diary. Riding serpentine country blues far too slippery to get a good grip on, she murmurs with sweetened venom, “Where I lead me I will follow.” This time, the singer, songwriter and standup bassist headed into the studio with Luther Dickinson — her bandmate in The Wandering — bent on retracing her earliest vagabond-ish steps. She drew on an episode where she and a friend ditched high school and caught a bus to Chicago, only to be shipped home two days later, but gave the restless imagination behind the act priority over the actual events. Looking over her shoulder, even at a distance, you find yourself glued to her youthful confessions of alienation. JEWLY HIGHT
