American Artisan Festival

For 38 years, Nancy Saturn's American Artisan Gallery filled a niche that is becoming more difficult to discern outside of artisan hotbeds like Black Mountain, NC. Galleries that feature fine craftwork are almost as difficult to brand as contemporary art spaces, and the term "crafts" in a place like Nashville all too often refers to inexpensive, folksy items made for tourists--with good intentions, but little unique talent or training in age-old practices like woodturning, ceramics or metalwork. As of March, the American Artisan Gallery is no more, but this spring fest is still going strong, and the fine wares--along with the smells from the food vendors--always mean summer is just around the corner.
