Fresh from a trip to France, where she was one of the hits at the gigantic Craponne (really) country music festival, Ms. Digby trumps the pointless but long-running Texas vs. Tennessee debate by dishing up honky-tonk music that’s danceable enough to earn her an enthusiastic following among the Lone Star State’s many two-steppers, but rooted deeply enough in her native Nashville area’s traditions to earn her the appreciation of Music City stalwarts like Vince Gill. Indeed, while she can wail a heartbreaking shuffle as well as any denizen of Lower Broadway, Digby’s starting to reveal a more wide-ranging appreciation of country styles, bolstering hardcore classics with deft arrangements of bluegrass staples and more modern material, too. Her sound is still a far, far cry from Music Row’s stock-in-trade, but this is one singer who’s less interested in manning the stylistic barricades than she is in finding her own way — and she’s doing a hell of a job.
