By frontman Jeff Tweedys own admission, their 95 debut A.M. is the black sheep of the Wilco records. An obvious transition from Tweedys early years with alt-country protomen Uncle Tupelo toward the progressive rock that would dominate their catalog for the next decade, A.M. wears its country-blues leanings on its sleeve. That said, it makes for an odd yet interesting choice for Mike Mayeauxa Nashville resident after Katrina scattered his musical connections in New Orleansand his band to cover in its entirety, song for song. The Punch Brothers may have delivered a bluegrass rendition of Poor Places last month from Wilcos seminal Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but for true-blood Tweedy fans, it doesnt get much purer than this.
