A.M. Radio

By frontman Jeff Tweedy’s own admission, their ‘95 debut A.M. is the “black sheep of the Wilco records.” An obvious transition from Tweedy’s early years with alt-country protomen Uncle Tupelo toward the progressive rock that would dominate their catalog for the next decade, A.M. wears its country-blues leanings on its sleeve. That said, it makes for an odd yet interesting choice for Mike Mayeaux—a Nashville resident after Katrina scattered his musical connections in New Orleans—and his band to cover in its entirety, song for song. The Punch Brothers may have delivered a bluegrass rendition of “Poor Places” last month from Wilco’s seminal Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but for true-blood Tweedy fans, it doesn’t get much purer than this.
