Allen F. Gwinn: Teenage Photographer at Shelby Park Nature Center

This collection of black-and-white images--taken by the late father of Nashville photographer Beth Gwinn when he was 18--captures a bygone era of our city, back when trolley cars ran through the streets and Legislative Plaza was just a grass field. Though Allen Gwinn gave up his photography ambitions upon enlisting in World War II, his pictures reveal a keen eye: Some of the images--a long-gone windmill in a snowy Shelby Park, a gritty shipyard scene--have a mystical hue that can make you nostalgic for a Nashville you never knew existed. It's also the perfect opportunity to check out the way-cool Shelby Park Nature Center, which features a "green roof" and other sustainable features.
Tuesdays-Fridays. Starts: Jan. 6. Continues through March 31, 2009
