New York-based artist Alexis Gideon has presented his multimedia video opera Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong in Nashville before — he performed it at Springwater in April — but the guys at Open Lot were good enough to bring him back for another performance before he moves on to his next work. This is just the kind of offbeat art event I wish I saw more often — Gideon’s based the piece on Wu Cheng’en’s novel Journey to the West, one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, but he’s animated it with ’90s Day-glo colors, Claymation montages, and a mixture of lo-fi weirdness and technological ingenuity. The work ends up looking like Cory Arcangel and Hayao Miyazaki are illustrating a psychedelic episode of Robot Chicken or Liquid Television, but with Eastern metaphysical overtones. Alongside the video, Gideon will perform the narrative soundtrack live, and while these tracks kind of remind us of Anti-Pop Consortium’s idiosyncratic hip-hop or Beck’s eccentric soundscapes, Gideon clearly has a style all his own.
