The question of why Alecia Nugent isn’t a much bigger star than she presently is probably garners several answers, but none of them have anything to do with her voice, which is one of bluegrass’s most exquisite and nuanced instruments. Working with producer Carl Jackson, she’s shown herself as a reliable song chooser, too, working in the seam between “classic” country and several varieties of bluegrass to find material that showcases both the strength and vulnerability of her singing. Arguably overdue for a recording, she brings a newish lineup to the show; former bandmember and occasional helper Ashby Frank will cover the mandolin and harmony vocals — the latter along with the excellent Beth Lawrence on bass. ETSU bluegrass program kids Seth Patton and Jared Hensley round out the lineup on banjo and guitar respectively, but there’s never any question that Ms. Nugent’s in charge — and more than up to the job.
