Bromberg represents an era when outstanding instrumentalists didnt take themselves too seriously. An in-demand guitarist from the mid-1960s on, Bromberg played on three Bob Dylan albums as well as sessions by everyone from Willie Nelson to Ringo Starr. He carved his own cult following as a freewheeling bandleader who drew on ragtime and country blues to create jaunty albums that included contributions by the Grateful Dead and George Harrison. Never the celebrity type, he slowly withdrew from recording in the 80s, settling down in Chicago, where he built and repaired violins. A 2007 comeback album drew a Grammy nomination, and he remains a spry and refreshing solo performer with a contagious sense of joy in everything he does.
