Here's a Christmas show featuring some pretty jolly performers. A Memphis native who made the move to Nashville, Drew Holcomb specializes in hooky classic-rock concoctions that detail the ups and downs of the lives of young professional musicians — check out his healthy but far from uncomplicated songs about late-night drama queens and other denizens of the bohemian fringe. His tight little band, The Neighbors, splits the difference between Petty-esque power-pop and Springsteen choruses. Meanwhile, Dave Barnes is another Nashville performer with a knack for hooks and smooth pop-rock songs. On this year's full-length release What We Want, What We Get, Barnes came up with one of the year's catchiest and most commercial retro-soul records, complete with Steely Dan chord changes and nods to reggae. Both artists are part of a thriving Nashville pop scene that is rooted in community — and sounds like it.
