With majority leader Bill Frist now in charge of the U.S. Senate, change is in store for our humble little city. Here are a few things to expect:
♦ Fort Frist, a $1.6 billion training facility for U.S. Army nighttime military activities, will be constructed in Joelton inside the city’s Beaman Park. “The trails there are fabulous for troop movements, and we’re excited the rednecks want to play al-Queda,” a Frist spokesman told reporters.
♦ A $16.2 million grant to the Tennessee Department of Transportation will create an interstate spur running from I-40 to what can be roughly described as Hospital Corp. of America headquarters on Charlotte Avenue.
♦ Presidential candidate Bill Frist has announced that as of 2005, he would like to be called “Billy.”
♦ Tom Frist, co-founder of the Hospital Corp. of America, has been named ambassador to France. Outgoing Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe has been named ambassador to Turkey, and Republican activist Susan Simons has been appointed ambassador to Spain.
♦ The Lynnwood Boulevard home of former Vice President Al Gore, a stately mansion in Belle Meade, has been declared a Superfund site.
♦ The Fisk University history department has been awarded $635,000 to study the “Effect of the Dixiecrat Party on Contemporary American Political Discourse.”
♦ My Family, My Future, an autobiography written entirely between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., features reflections by Billy Frist on his action-packed 50-odd years on the planet, climaxing with his leadership of the Montgomery Bell Academy football squad over Father Ryan in 1968.
