GEORGE AND ANN GEIST, owners of John Geist and Sons Forge Art Iron and Lawnmower Repair, 311 Jefferson St.
How long has the business been here? This place started in 1886 as George's grandfather's blacksmith shop, then his father was here and George started in 1955. I think I was doing some bookkeeping then but mostly raising children.
When did they stop working on horses and start working on lawnmowers? Well in the '30s the horse business was pretty much gone, and they started doing the ornamental iron you see on the wall here. We still do a small amount of iron work in the winter, but most people just go to Home Depot or someplace nowadays. We really enjoy small engines, so that's mostly what we do now.
How'd you learn it? By doing it.
What's the worst thing you can do to your lawnmower? Not taking care of them, leaving old gas in them, not putting in oil, dirty filters and just not doing general maintenance.
How long did it take you to get married? Oh, about three years, and that was just 49 years ago, so that's not long....
What are you guys planning for the 50th? Were thinkin' about maybe having some pork chops or hash and biscuits, something real fancy like that.
How many kids? Eight, and 19 grandkids.
What do you guys do for fun? We love to hike. We went to Oregon this summer and hiked and will be going to the Smokies this fall.
