A Face in the Crowd

BEN WEINZIMER, fifth-grade band student, Head Magnet School

What instrument do you play? Bass clarinet. I wanted a low-sounding instrument, but I couldn't play brass, so this is the next best thing. I like the way it looks...like a giant saxophone.

Are you ever going to play bass clarinet in a rock band? No, because it's hard to get out the low notes when you play fast. The high notes are hard, if you squeak.

How about marching band?

Mmm.... (shaking head) No, because if I play bass clarinet, then I have to carry it. Plus, it's hard to see where you're putting your fingers.

If your instrument had a super power, what would it be? Probably to play really loud and knock everyone down, so no one could gang up on you. It would wear a black shirt and silver mask, because those are the colors of the instrument.

Which instruments do you think are the most annoying in band? Probably the flutes, because they're real high. Or maybe just the instruments that squeak a lot.
