THOMAS BATTS, fisherman, Shelby Park
Catchin' anything? I'm telling ya, they've stopped bitin'. Ain't nobody pulling anything out.
What do you normally catch, and how long have you been fishing here? Just Rainbows. I just gut 'em, and scrape the scales off 'em and throw 'em in the deep fryer. Some people bake 'em. That's too dry for me. I've been fishin' in this spot since December.
What time do you get here in the morning? About 7 o'clock. You got to wait 'til you get some daylight in the park. (Pointing at his fishing buddies) Man, they get mad, because they get down here about quarter to seven, but I get here later, and just start catching 'em.... Y'all should've been down here when the cranes were here. You might lay your pole down and do something, and that crane would come down and take your fish away, pole and all. We had to stop leaving the fish out, and put the bucket in the car.
Do you ever fish the Cumberland? I've caught a lot of fish out of the Cumberland River: catfish, carp, buffalo.... It's a white fish, like a carp.
What's your favorite? Bluegills...I don't know. They just taste better. I'd give all the catfish away for some bluegills.
What about turtle stew and frog legs? Do you ever cook those? These turtles here are liable to bite your hook. I fry mine. They're good, but I go down to Food Lion for my frog legs.
