It may have been inevitable that the ever-industrious producer/writer/director Mary McCallum would get around to creating a new version of the Dickens classic. No tame reworking of the existing story, McCallum’s take is set in the modern day, revolving around Ms. Eberta Scrooge, a gun-toting, African-American Republican who discovers the true meaning of Christmas over the course of one fateful evening. The script and various holiday songs are enacted and sung by familiar Nashville actors, many of whom have been regulars in McCallum’s SistaStyle Productions’ other theatrical offerings. The excellent Tamiko Robinson stars as Eberta, and her supporting cast includes Shawn Whitsell, Shelena Walden, Gayle Demonbreun, Jimmie Hill and nine others, including the playwright. In conjunction with the show, SistaStyle is participating in a toy drive; audience members are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys that will be donated to needy families.
